13 ESSENTIAL TECH DIVING SKILLS EVERY TECH DIVER SHOULD MASTER!

Nothing is rushed. Nothing is accidental.

This is where technical diving skills stop being theory.

Technical diving opens the door to deeper wrecks, longer bottom times, planned decompression, advanced gas use, rebreathers and increasingly complex underwater environments.

But technical diving isn't simply about going deeper.

It's about becoming a more precise, disciplined and capable diver.

They aren't simply boxes to tick during a course.

They're habits to refine on every dive.

1. ADVANCED BUOYANCY & TRIM

Excellent buoyancy and stable trim are fundamental to technical diving because almost every other technical skill depends on them.

A well-trimmed diver remains streamlined and balanced, reducing drag, unnecessary movement and gas consumption while improving control.

You should be able to remain motionless at a chosen depth while operating equipment, deploying a DSMB, communicating with your team, conducting a gas switch or responding to a problem.

During decompression, precision becomes even more important. Stops need to be controlled rather than approximated, particularly as expanding gas makes buoyancy increasingly sensitive during the final stages of an ascent.

Good technical divers don't constantly fight their buoyancy.

They control it.

Practice maintaining depth without unnecessary hand movements, finning or sculling. Have another diver video you underwater. What feels perfectly horizontal isn't always what the camera sees.

Dropped knees, raised heads, constantly moving fins and excessive corrections become much easier to identify on video.

Precision first. Depth later.

2. EQUIPMENT CONFIGURATION & FAMILIARITY

Technical diving equipment should have a reason for being where it is.

Regulators, SPGs, hoses, D-rings, lights, cutting devices, DSMBs, reels, spools, backup masks and cylinders should be configured so they're accessible, streamlined and predictable.

You shouldn't need to search for equipment underwater.

You should know exactly where it is.

Consistency becomes particularly important as task loading increases. If something goes wrong, your hands should instinctively know where to find the equipment you need.

Before entering the water, technical divers conduct thorough equipment checks covering areas including:

  • Gas type and cylinder pressure

  • Regulators and valves

  • BCD or wing operation

  • Drysuit inflation where applicable

  • Computers and decompression settings

  • Primary and backup lights

  • DSMBs, reels and spools

  • Cutting devices

  • Cylinder identification and MODs

  • Team equipment compatibility

The objective is simple:

Find problems before you get underwater.

3. GAS PLANNING & GAS MANAGEMENT

Technical diving begins long before you enter the water.

One of the most important technical diving skills is knowing how much gas you have, how much you require and when the dive must turn.

Technical dives may involve bottom gas, travel gas, decompression gases and bailout supplies.

Gas planning therefore needs to consider:

  • Individual gas consumption

  • Depth

  • Planned bottom time

  • Decompression obligations

  • Cylinder capacity

  • Reserve requirements

  • Team requirements

  • Foreseeable emergencies

  • Gas required to safely exit or ascend following a failure

The objective isn't simply having enough gas for the planned dive.

You need enough gas to deal with the dive when it doesn't go according to plan.

Estimate your expected gas consumption before a dive and compare it with your actual consumption afterwards.

Over time, your gas planning becomes increasingly representative of the way you actually dive.

4. PROPULSION TECHNIQUES

Technical divers need more than an effective frog kick.

Different environments and situations require different propulsion techniques.

A capable technical diver should develop techniques including:

Frog Kick — efficient propulsion while maintaining horizontal trim.

Modified Frog Kick — smaller movements where disturbing the bottom needs to be minimised.

Modified Flutter Kick — useful in confined environments when performed correctly.

Back Kick — allowing the diver to move backwards without changing orientation.

Helicopter Turn — providing controlled directional changes while remaining essentially in position.

These techniques become particularly important around wrecks and other environments where poor fin technique can quickly destroy visibility.

The objective isn't to look impressive underwater.

It's to move precisely while disturbing as little water as possible.

Good technical divers leave very little evidence that they were there.

5. GAS SWITCHING PROCEDURES

Gas switching deserves to be treated as a skill in its own right.

Technical dives may require switching between gases at predetermined depths. These procedures need to be deliberate, methodical and consistent with the procedures taught during your technical training.

The diver must positively identify the correct cylinder and gas, confirm that the gas is appropriate for the current depth, coordinate with the team and correctly update the dive computer where required.

A gas switch is never something to rush.

Maintain buoyancy.

Maintain team position.

Identify the gas.

Confirm the depth.

Follow your trained procedure.

There is no prize for performing a gas switch quickly. Correct beats fast. Every time.

6. REDUNDANCY & BACKUP SYSTEMS

Redundancy is fundamental to technical diving.

Depending on the dive and configuration, this may include redundant:

  • Breathing gas

  • Regulators

  • Buoyancy systems

  • Computers or timing/depth devices

  • Masks

  • Lights

  • Cutting devices

  • DSMBs and signalling equipment

But carrying two of something doesn't automatically make you safer.

You need to be able to access and use the backup when something has already gone wrong.

Practice locating equipment without looking for it.

Can you find your backup mask?

Deploy your backup light?

Reach your cutting device?

Access an alternate gas source?

And can you do all of that while maintaining buoyancy, trim and awareness of your team?

Redundancy works only when equipment, training and muscle memory work together.

7. VALVE SHUTDOWNS & GAS FAILURE MANAGEMENT

For divers using configurations where valve manipulation forms part of emergency procedures, shutdown drills are an important technical skill.

Can you reach the required valves?

Can you identify the problem?

Can you manipulate the appropriate valve while remaining neutrally buoyant?

Can you maintain trim and team awareness throughout the procedure?

A free-flowing regulator, failed hose or other gas-system problem doesn't conveniently occur when you're ready for it.

Training creates a repeatable response.

Practice begins under controlled conditions with an appropriately qualified technical instructor and progresses as competence develops.

The objective isn't a frantic response.

Identify. Control. Communicate. Resolve.

8. PROBLEM-SOLVING UNDERWATER

Technical diving is physical, but many of its biggest challenges are cognitive.

A flooded mask may be simple.

A failed light may be simple.

A current may be manageable.

A gas problem may be manageable.

The real challenge begins when several things happen simultaneously.

Task loading can quickly reduce situational awareness and encourage rushed decisions.

Well-trained technical divers learn to control the situation rather than allowing the situation to control them.

Maintain breathing.

Maintain buoyancy.

Protect the breathing gas.

Communicate with the team.

Assess the problem.

Then act according to your training.

Technical training deliberately introduces controlled problems because the first time you experience significant task loading shouldn't be during a real emergency.

Slow is smooth. Smooth becomes efficient.

9. SITUATIONAL AWARENESS

Technical divers need to know far more than their current depth.

At any point during a dive, you should have a clear picture of what's happening around you.

That means maintaining awareness of:

  • Depth

  • Time

  • Gas

  • Decompression status

  • Team position

  • Navigation

  • Environmental conditions

  • Current

  • Visibility

  • Equipment status

  • Remaining dive objectives

  • Exit strategy

This becomes increasingly important as task loading rises.

Focusing completely on one problem can cause another to develop unnoticed.

The objective is to develop the capacity to deal with the immediate task without losing awareness of the overall dive.

Technical diving isn't just about knowing what you're doing.

It's about knowing what's happening around you while you're doing it.

10. TEAMWORK & COMMUNICATION

Technical diving is built around effective team procedures.

Before entering the water, every diver should understand the plan.

That includes:

  • Maximum depth

  • Planned bottom time

  • Gas strategy

  • Turn pressures

  • Decompression plan

  • Ascent procedures

  • Gas switches

  • Team positioning

  • Lost-diver procedures

  • Separation procedures

  • Emergency procedures

  • Abort procedures

Underwater communication should be clear, deliberate and understood by everyone.

A strong technical team often appears remarkably calm.

Everyone knows where the other divers are.

Everyone understands the plan.

Everyone recognises the signals.

And everyone understands that any diver can call the dive at any time.

Technical diving isn't about proving how tough you are.

It's about bringing the entire team home safely.

11. DECOMPRESSION DISCIPLINE

Technical decompression requires precision and patience.

A planned stop isn't "somewhere around six metres."

Depth, time, ascent rate and gas use all form part of the decompression strategy.

Strong decompression discipline means maintaining awareness of:

  • Current depth

  • Ascent rate

  • Stop time

  • Decompression obligation

  • Breathing gas

  • Cylinder pressure

  • Team position

  • Environmental conditions

  • Contingency requirements

The final portion of an ascent can be particularly demanding because expanding gas needs to be managed while the diver maintains accurate stops and team position.

Recreational dives provide an excellent opportunity to practise the fundamentals.

Instead of simply floating around during your safety stop, practise holding a precise depth in good trim with minimal movement.

Make every dive a training dive.

12. DSMB, REEL & LINE SKILLS

A DSMB is far more than something you occasionally send to the surface.

For technical divers, DSMB and line skills can become an important component of ascent control, decompression procedures and surface signalling.

A diver should be able to deploy a DSMB without:

  • Losing buoyancy

  • Becoming entangled

  • Ascending unintentionally

  • Dropping equipment

  • Losing awareness of teammates

Reel and spool management should become equally familiar.

Line needs to be controlled, equipment needs to remain streamlined and entanglement hazards need to be recognised immediately.

Practise deployment under controlled conditions until it becomes another routine underwater skill rather than an event.

13. DIVE PLANNING, CONTINGENCIES & EMERGENCY ASCENTS

Every technical dive needs more than a Plan A.

Before entering the water, technical divers consider what they'll do if the dive changes.

What happens if you lose a decompression gas?

What happens if a regulator fails?

What happens if visibility deteriorates?

What happens if the team becomes separated?

What happens if the dive needs to be turned early?

What happens if a diver needs assistance?

Depending on the dive, responding may involve gas sharing, switching to an alternate or bailout supply, deploying a DSMB, following a guideline, exiting in reduced visibility or modifying the ascent according to trained contingency procedures.

Good technical dive planning doesn't assume everything will go wrong.

It simply acknowledges that everything may not go right.

The objective is controlled execution under pressure.

Technical divers don't train because they expect emergencies.

They train so they know what to do when the original plan changes.
