Oxygen sensors in analysers and rebreathers are sophisticated devices that  operate through a chemical reaction that generates a small electrical current, which is measured to estimate the oxygen pressure present.

Essentially, an oxygen sensor is an electrochemical generator composed of a lead anode, a gold cathode, and a liquid electrolyte, typically a solution of water and potassium hydroxide. Several environmental factors, such as pressure, temperature, humidity, and the presence of oxygen, influence the chemical reaction. Additionally, manufacturing factors, including the purity and precise quantities of chemicals used, significantly impact sensor performance.

The chemical reaction within the sensor begins upon assembly, continues at a slow rate while the sensor remains in its sealed packaging, and accelerates when exposed to the atmosphere. Over time, this reaction consumes the chemicals, leading to degradation of the sensor and a gradual loss of accuracy and reliability.

Various sensor replacement strategies exist, but most rebreather manufacturers recommend replacing sensors periodically before these performance issues arise due to natural aging and usage. The generally accepted maximum useful lifespan of oxygen sensors in rebreathers is 18 months, with typical lifespans of 12 months or less, depending on usage and environmental conditions.

Manufacturers strongly advise against improper storage techniques such as vacuum packing, freezing, or using inert gases, as these practices can cause irreparable damage to the sensors.

• Scheduled Replacement: Install fresh sensors in the rebreather and replace them after 12 months of use. This aligns with the manufacturer’s recommendations, and annual replacement ensures optimal sensor performance.
• Improper Storage: Some divers remove their sensors after each dive and follow a personal storage routine in an attempt to prolong sensor life. This improper handling may lead to sensors that either malfunction or exhibit unpredictable behaviours.
• At the end of 12 months, sensors are discarded, with the diver assuming the risk of sensor failure due to mishandling.
• Ignoring Manufacturer Guidelines: In some cases, divers disregard the recommended sensor replacement intervals, continuing to use sensors beyond their useful life until they fail. 

The rebreather community has established through extensive experience that the effective lifespan of a "10mV in air" oxygen sensor in rebreather applications is between 12 to 18 months.
While most responsible divers adhere to manufacturer recommendations, some continue to question the rationale behind the frequent sensor replacements, suspecting a “hidden agenda” from manufacturers, and opting to extend sensor life on their own terms.

SCR REBREATHER DIVING (Level 2)

The Pro-Dive/SSI Level Two Semi Closed Rebreather Diving program combines all skill and knowledge from Level One plus new deeper dives with limited decompression, providing divers with the required knowledge and training, necessary to independently plan and conduct safe (up to 25 minutes of decompression) diving, using the Mares Horizon semi-closed rebreather (SCR), diving to a maximum depth of 40 metres, using a complete SCR Total Diving System and SCR diving procedures, with an equally or more qualified dive buddy.

Pro-Dive Central Coast Rebreather training programs are the perfect way to increase your knowledge and skills, whilst at the same time, learning how to safely use the new semi-closed  rebreather equipment.

Learning to dive with a Semi Closed Rebreather is easier than you may think!

Our rebreather programs use a globally recognised Total Teaching System, which includes digital learning materials and proven instructional techniques, this process ensures you have a safe, fun and exciting learning experience.

You will learn the theory needed to safely dive with an SCR unit, how to select your SCR Total Diving System plus, how to plan safe and fun dives, that maximises the benefits of an SCR.

Level 2: Five days program

This Semi Closed Rebreather program provides the knowledge and experience required; to independently plan and conduct dives to a maximum depth of 40 metres with a maximum of 25 minutes of accelerated decompression, with an equally qualified dive buddy using the Horizon SCR unit, SSI training techniques and SCR extended range skills.

You will complete:

• Academic sessions and Final exam 
• Equipment configuration session
• XR Water Fitness Evaluation 
• XR Rescue
• Complete at least one confined water skill development session with a minimum cumulative time of at least one hour  
• Complete at least six open water training dives 
• Complete at least 420 minutes of in-water runtime on the Mares Horizon SCR unit.

• Deep Diver certification 
• Personal Nitrox dive computer
• 24 dives

Certification:

The SCR Extended Range certification entitles the holder to dive with an equally- or more-qualified buddy, with the equipment configuration used during training and SCR diving procedures, to depths of up to 40 metres with a maximum of 25 minutes decompression, providing that dives are conducted in environments similar to those of the diver’s training and experience.

Rebreather Ocean Try Dive  

Take your Horizon SCR experience to the next level, by completing an ocean dive at a local bay. Once you have completed the Horizon setup, and successfully completed the confined water session, you can opt for an ocean experience.

The Horizon Try SCR ocean experience offers you a "hands on" introductory experience using the Mares Horizon, semi-closed rebreather. 
This is an open water session designed to give participants an introduction into rebreather diving. 

Dive time is a minimum of one hour.
No experience is required and SCR equipment is provided.
