On 26 October 1942, the luxury liner turned American troopship struck friendly mines just offshore from Santo. In one of the greatest evacuation stories of World War II, over 5,300 servicemen safely abandoned ship before the magnificent vessel slipped beneath the sea.

Today, the Coolidge rests peacefully beneath warm tropical waters, preserved as an underwater museum where history and marine life combine to create an unforgettable diving experience.
